A (Finally) Balanced Perspective On Chlorella

If you're one who likes to take advantage of what nature has to offer, and prefers to get optimal nutrition out of food intake, rather than supplementing, you've probably done a lot of googling/researching about super foods, and the like. (And have been told a whole lot of rubbish a long the way.) I found this book particularly helpful because it didn't try to sell me some miracle solution... Instead it gave me facts and enough information for me to make my own informed choices. Highly recommend to anyone that seeks maximum benefit from their diet!

This is the book to have if you are considering taking or are already taking Chlorella for your health. I specifically wanted to get this book because I'm already taking Chlorella and wanted to go beyond the advertising and hype to get down to the nitty-gritty facts. This book transcends the myths with peer reviewed scientific journals that are not long drawn out boring reads, but get to the points that are substantiated by pages of scientific references at the end of the book. Look I already knew that Chlorella is a super food with high protein ingredients and cancer fighting abilities, but I wanted more. Chlorella - Myths, Risks & benefits fills in the gaps in giving you the total picture, both pros and cons. Listen if you're planning to invest in Chlorella or are already taking it like me then you owe it to yourself to get this book, that goes beyond the curtain into the operating manual of this 2.5 billion year super food that will give you the knowledge and benefits in taking your health to the next level.

A book that gives the facts in a straightforward way

This is an excellent book if you want the facts on Chlorella, both the good as well as the potentially worrisome.

Don't expect a really entertaining style: yes, it is well written, but the style is a bit dry, maybe because the author merely wants to state the facts as clearly as possible. Yet a book on a topic like Chlorella could hardly be very entertaining, could it?

What it DOES give is an incredible amount of scientific information on the possible benefits, as well as on possible risks, of including Chlorella in your diet.

I bought this book believing that Chlorella might be a sort of "wonder food", and yes, from what the book says, it perhaps can be a marvelous addition to your diet. Nonetheless, the author points out that in some people, it could do more harm than good.

All in all, I think that anyone considering purchasing Chlorella should read - and even study - this book first. No doubt: it deserves five stars, due to the wealth of information provided!

Excellent introductory glimpse of neuropharmacology

This book is an excellent introductory text, suitable for undergraduates or "outsiders", outlining the basic principles of neuropharmacology. Reviews of the major concepts involved in neurotransmission are included in the first half of the book, such as cellular and molecular (read DNA) biological basics as well as descriptions of amino acid based neurotransmission. The second half of the book is organized with each chapter devoted to a single molecule. My major criticism is that although the title is "The BIOCHEMICAL Basis of Neuropharmacology", the chemistry in the text is rather simple and incomplete, and the lack of quantitative discussion of pharmacokinetics is a major disappointment. All beginning students of neuropharmacology should purchase this book - in paperback it is truly a bargain. END

This reference is easy to read. As well, unlike most pharmacology texts, this one does not concentrate on drugs, but rather on the underlying physiology. There is an introduction to neurons, synapses and action potentials. There is an introduction to modern molecular methods. It is interesting to note that in describing molecular cloning methods, the work of J. G. Sutcliffe, R.J. Milner, and F.E. Bloom is reported whereby a cDNA library was prepared from mRNAs from whole rat brain, then it was seen what individual cDNAs hybridized with the mRNAs from rat liver and kidney. Approximately 30,000 of the brain's 50,000 mRNAs were not detected in the liver or kidney, showing that much of the rat's DNA is for neuronal purposes. In the introduction to receptors, it is noted that there about a thousand known receptors to neurotransmitters, hormones and odorants. The introduction to neuromodulators includes the neuronal effects of nitric oxide (thought to be involved in both long-term potentiation LTP and long-term depression LTD; nitric oxide synthase inhibitors will block NMDA receptor activation). The chapter on amino acid neurotransmitters includes excitatory glutamate and aspartate, and inhibitory GABA, glycine, alanine, cystathionine and serine. There are chapters on cholinergic (acetylcholine) and catecholaminergic (norepinephrine, epinephrine and dopamine) neurotransmitters. Serotonin and histamine neurotransmitters are considered in detail in the next chapter. There is an introduction to neuroactive peptides, noting that they must be synthesized on ribosomes, then at the smooth endoplasmic reticulum they are put into vesicles in a prohormonal form, and only then transported to the nerve terminals. The book concludes with introductions to the cellular mechanisms involved in learning, and the involvement of neurotransmitters in neurological and psychiatric illnesses.

About the Author
Eric Schiller (born March 20, 1955 in New York City) is an American chess player, trainer, arbiter and one of the most prolific authors of books on chess in the 20th century. In 1974, Schiller was the Illinois Junior Champion. Schiller played for the University of Chicago team several times at the Pan American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship. He was an organizer of the Hawaii International chess festivals 1994-98 including 1998 US Open California Champion 1995. Later that year, he appeared as a chess adviser for the music group Phish on some of the stops for their "Chess Tour" where they played an ongoing game of two chess moves per tour stop and some "band vs. audience" partial games as part of their stage performance. Schiller was an arbiter at several notable games and championships including the FIDE World Chess Championship 2000. While Vladimir Kramnik and Garry Kasparov opted not to participate in the event, they had both endorsed Schiller for this sensitive role during the planning stages. As of April 2009, Schiller has a FIDE rating of 2166. He is also an International Arbiter and International Trainer. Schiller's expertise and publications in the Flohr-Zaitsev Variation made him a sought-after expert when Gary Kasparov used that opening at the second game at the World Chess Championship 1990.

An interesting book from IM Schiller. I consider it a variation of the Robatsch. It has most in common with the Sniper and Accelerated Dragon Sicilian but can morph into Benoni-like positions as well. Schiller has a strong proclivity for naming and he does it in spades with Fly the Pterodactyl. Not wholly necessary but sort of fun. The page layout is a bit chaotic and inconsistent. Lots of games, discussion of ideas/themes so if you have an interest in the Robatsch, Acc.Dragon and/or Sniper I would recommend this book. Another fun and useful volume on the Hippos, offbeat Robatsch lines is Wall, et al - Winning with the Krazy Kat and Old Hippo.

Waste of time

I bought this book in anticipation of getting some helpful hints for the test. There are about 3 pages worth of information about the actual test. The rest of the book is about finding a job and how to pass an interview...which I didn't even read. It gives such suggestions as "get a good nights sleep" and "take your time on the test". What a waste of money...

Garbage Chinese translation.

Absolute rubbish. Don't waste your money. Obviously 99% of the content is regurgitated from a general template on any certified course. The translation is very poor and reads like the original script was written in chinese. How any publisher has the audacity to publish this drivel is beyond me.
