Not for Hindi language learners

I gave this book "one star" only because it is not clear from the Amazon listing that it is NOT a book for native English speakers who are learning the Hindi language, which is what I wanted.

This is a book for native Hindi speakers who want to improve their English. Genders of Hindi nouns are not given. Pronunciation is given (in Hindi) for the English head word, not the Hindi words.

WONDERFUL ENGLISH-HINDI DICTIONARY

This dicitionary is just what it says it is. It is a VERY VERY COMPREHENSIVE AND UP-TO-DATE dictionary with many, many words. It is like you are looking up words in a typical dictionary in English. I have yet to not find a word I was looking for other than for some reason "internet" is not in there anywhere. The book gives you the gender of every word offers contextual meaning of each word in parentheses and even has an English grammar section at the end that would be useful for all learners of English, and an excellent reference source for problem areas for English speakers. I would however recommend that you also purchase Father Camil Bulcke's "An English to Hindi Dictionary" to go along with this. Both dictionaries are excellent, but every once in a while you have a word that has different ways to say it in which this one will have the other way you might hear it whereas the Rajpal does not. I hope this makes sense and will help aid in your search for good Hindi materials.

Good dictionary

I ordered this book and received the updated 2011 edition which was a good surprise. EXACT meanings of English words in Hindi are given including expressions and multiple meanings like the style of Merriam Webster. Gender is a big plus.

My only wish that for these words an example sentence is given. Oxford Hindi-English Dictionary has these translations but is mostly useless for a beginner student. This is the best dictionary I have found so far. This has way more words than Rupert Snell dictionary.

Rediscovering Mathematics: You Do the Math, by Shai Simonson is a great book. It starts with his piece on "How to Read Mathematics," which I love, and wends its way through lots of mathematical problems, and lots of ideas about how to teach and learn math....Simonson includes a number of problems I haven't seen before, which is quite a feat after all the grazing I've done online in the past few years. And the problems are at lots of levels, so there is much to chew on whatever your mathematical sophistication. --Math Mama

What a mix of problems! Simonson (Stonehill College) has provided a unique collection of problems intended for a wide range of readers. They seem to be all the fun and interesting problems that one finds as supplements and extras in a variety of textbooks. This reviewer has used many of the familiar problems in this work to generate interest or to motivate students on the need to learn what they might think are the more mundane topics in a textbook. There are problems related to the history of mathematics as well as problems related to more current business applications, fun applications, and even pop culture (e.g., e-commerce, sports, games, gambling). The mathematics covered includes number theory, statistics, combinatorics, geometry, and algebra. About the Author

Shai Simonson is a professor of computer science at Stonehill College. Simonson was born in Buffalo, grew up in New York City, spent ten years in Chicago, and now makes his home in the Boston area. Simonson is passionate about teaching mathematics in an active, experiential and dynamic fashion.

Simonson earned his B.A. in mathematics at Columbia University, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in computer science at Northwestern University. He is a member of the MAA and the ACM. He spent two years (1983 and 1999) teaching and doing research in Israel. Simonson has taught mathematics and computer science courses for almost 30 years at a number of colleges and universities including University of Illinois, Northwestern Univeristy, Tel Aviv University, ArsDigita University, and Stonehill College. He also taught at the middle and high school levels in New York, Chicago, and Boston.

the book does what it says it will do

If you read Amazon's product description it says: "the book shows how to learn and teach mathematics through investigation, experimentation, and discovery." That is a bit vaguely worded, does "how to learn" mean how to learn higher math and that you will be proficient in all math by the end of the book? No, this book teaches the process of how to learn math, how to go about solving complex math problems. You will learn some math as the book uses examples from different areas of math to show how to go through the experimentation process. I have a lot of quick learning math books such as "Calculus the easy way" type of books, and some books indeed are better than others in explaining the content. But in the end you need a complete foundation of base knowledge to be able to use something like Calculus, there are no shortcuts. And so it is with this book, you are required to have some familiarity with high school level math, this book will only equip you with tools you need to learn such a huge subject, not magically make you understand everything.

Regarding the price of the book, it should be mentioned that this book is a hardcover book with a high quality binding. You might notice that when you buy hardcover coffee table books that the binding will wear and become loose after a while or even break if you open it too wide. The binding on this book is very solid, yet the covers and pages will readily open widely and dont have to be broken in to hold open. Publishers need to be held accountable to the quality of their product, the publisher spared no expense on this book and deserve mention for it in this review.

JIM PUHALLA is President of Sportscape International, Inc., a firm specializing in the design, construction, renovation, and maintenance of sports fields and related facilities. He has contributed numerous articles to Sports Turf magazine and received the magazine?s "Baseball Diamond of the Year" award in 1995 for reconstructing Boardman High School?s field in Ohio.

JEFF KRANS is Professor of Agronomy in the Golf and Sports Turf Management program at Mississippi State University. He has conducted extensive turfgrass research, as well as developed, patented, and commercialized four turf-type bermudagrass cultivars.

MIKE GOATLEY is Professor of Agronomy in the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences at Mississippi State University. He has conducted turfgrass research in the areas of plant nutrition, plant growth regulation, and soil modification.

Good reference learned a lot

Book is good but the title is a little deceiving. Quite often it states, Paraphrasing, "buy our other book if you really want more specifics on field design". However I did learn alot and it is a good reference.

The Best Technical Reference on Baseball Fields I could find
By The Ideator
I used this technical reference book for a course in Contracts and Procurement, in which I had to write detailed specifications for a baseball park. These specifications were part of a Request for Proposal to a fictitious group of general contractors.

This book left no stone unturned, educating me on all aspects of building and maintaining a ball diamond. My professor, who had seen many similar papers before, was impressed and I received a perfect mark.

I also interviewed a general contractor who was building 8 baseball fields, and found I was able to talk intelligently with him, and knew all the various terms and types of materials used in a baseball field, as a direct result of reading this book.

I was impressed with the overall knowledge of the authors, starting with how to grade the park for maximum drainage and playability, fencing, types of turf required for various weather zones in North America, pest and weed prevention, layout, dimensions, equipment used for maintaining and marking the field -- there wasn't one thing I wanted to know that I couldn't find in this book.

I recommend it very highly.
