About the Author

DEBASHIS CHATTERJEE has taught leadership classes at Harvard University and at the Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) in Calcutta, Lucknow, and Kozhikode for nearly two decades. He has been awarded the prestigious Fulbright Fellowship twice for predoctoral and postdoctoral work at Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government. Good for business leaders

The author of this book has studied over 100 commentaries on the Bhagavad Gita, and is most interested in creating a "transcreation" rather than a translation of the original text. Each chapter of the book corresponds to one of the 18 chapters of the Bhagavad-Gita.

The book contains some very beautiful writing. Here is an example: "Stillness is strength. Stillness is the power-point behind intense action. The eye of the cyclone is the stillness at the center of the storm."

There is lots of discussion of higher values, the search for one's true self, the desire to fulfill one's spiritual potential and rise above the clamor of the senses and the separate ego, etc. At times the writing is beautiful, colorful and inspirational:

"Where does...equality of vision come from? It comes from the ability to see the same human spirit dispersed in several forms across the dividing lines of caste,
creed, designations or degrees of accomplishment. When our meditation deepens, we are able to experience this unity in divinity on a daily basis."

Other times the writing becomes dense and wordy. Very few Sanskrit terms are mentioned, however, at times the author does occasionally invent his own words: "workship" and "awareness-centric" being a couple of examples.

My main challenge with this book has been to equate the message of the Bhagavad Gita with the ideals of big business. In a discussion of "holding onto faith," William Wrigley of the Wrigley's chewing gum fortune is held up as a shining example - in this case, of "faith in the product." On the next page is the example of Mahatma Gandhi who was also holding onto faith, but faith in nonviolence. This odd juxtaposition and others like it took a little getting used to.

On the subject of austerity, Ammadeo Peter Giannini, the founder of Bank of America (which along with TransAmerica amassed 7 billion dollars in his lifetime) is lauded for his valiant efforts to resist becoming a millionaire (by giving to charity) before his death in 1949. Noble though he was in many ways, this is hardly rings true as an example of austerity.

Also, I was surprised and rather disappointed to find that very few actual passages from the Gita quoted here. I guess given the title, I expected something resembling a translation of the original text. This book is most definitely not that.

Still, there are very beautiful moments throughout the book, and I am sure its positive messages will have much to offer to people in business leadership positions, provided that the book's ideas
align with their basic spiritual beliefs.

Timeless Lessons from the Ancients

One of my favorite quotations is from Walt Kelly's cartoon character Pogo, "We have met the enemy and it is us." But the idea is certainly not new. Sophocles, who lived from around 495 B.C. - 429 B. C. first captured the thought when he wrote, "The greatest griefs are those we cause ourselves."

I believe there is a tendency to think that we need to have the latest cutting-edge ideas to get ahead in business and life. But as shown from the above quotations, the ideas that endure the test of time are the ones that can have the greatest impact on our businesses and our lives. We should not be looking for some new fad ideas or the latest new technique to guide us. It is the proven, time-tested ideas that can be relied on to serve as our North Star - to guide our decisions so that we get the best results.

Timeless Leadership, By Debashis Chatterjee, takes 18 lessons from The Bhagavad Gita and shows us how these ancient lessons apply to the modern workplace as well as to modern life.

In case you are not familiar with the Bhagavad Gita, this is a spiritual classic from India, written between the fifth and fourth centuries BCE. The setting is a battlefield struggle by the warrior Arjuna. At first, the struggle seems to be with the opponent but eventually we see that the real struggle is internal. The Lord Krishna acts as a mentor to Arjuna - giving him advice on self-development. It is the classic struggles we all go through but by using the Sutras from the Bhagavad Gita, the author is able to show more clearly how these struggles apply to life today.

There are two things you will get from this book. First you will gain a much better appreciation for the Bhagavad Gita. The author has taken selected passages and brought out the lessons using contemporary language so that the message is clear and impactful.

The second major thing you will learn are the 18 powerful leadership concepts that are timeless. There are many leadership books currently advancing the idea that leadership starts within. But you will see that this lesson was first advanced in the Gita, "But the real war is inside Arjuna's mind. All conflicts reside in the content of our own mind. It is not the mountains we conquer but ourselves."

These are very powerful and timeless leadership concepts. The author very skillfully uses the Sutras from the Bhahavad Gita to deliver these concepts. But he also weaves in real life examples from today's business world that illustrate how the principle applies today.

The book does require some active thought on the part of the reader. If you are not willing to invest some time and energy studying the concepts, you will probably not gain the full value of this book.

If you are fascinated by learning from the ancients and seeing how these timeless, enduring principles apply today you should enjoy and profit from this book.

Ancient Wisdom for the Modern Leader

The idea of bringing ancient Eastern philosophy into the consciousness of today's leaders is a brilliant one. I have not given much thought to the Bhagavad Gita since my undergraduate days and was intrigued by the notion that its teachings might, as with the the Samurai teachings in The Book of Five Rings, enlighten and enrich modern leaders. Chatterjee has done an excellent job of matching Krishna's teachings to Arjuna with contemporary leadership situations. His examples are relevant and current.
Although there is much to praise here and many lessons to be learned, this is probably a book best read in small sections with time for reflection between each reading. It is carefully constructed, yet somehow not compelling. It defies the fast read - perhaps a plus in most leaders' rush onto the next great thing. Timeless Leadership, the book, is like the subject it addresses. It requires effort to reach mastery.

Very good

This is not a book about the phenomenology of sex, nor is it about the conditions under which sex (or reproduction) are desirable or good. The experiences of sex are not really the object of this book either. "Sex and Reason" is about reason (in the economic sense) and sex, about what we know about sex and some general limits on rationally organizing the social controls on sex and reproduction. On that level, it is very good and ought to be widely read, not merely within academia, but among Posner's colleagues on the bench, the public, and perhaps most of all legislators.

As for what "Sex and Reason" has to offer, the summary of empirical knowledge regarding sexuality is impressive and extremely useful, as many of the debates over controls on sexuality are permeated by positions and claims which are without foundation in fact. Additionally, Posner has brought together most of the topics naturally linked in a consideration of sex more generally. (Hence "Sex and Reason" would serve as a good textbook for philosophically-oriented courses on sexuality.) Not only are there discussions of abortion and the sale of reproductive services, but also discussions of exchanges of sexual services, social attitudes towards gays and lesbians, as well as of various reproductive and sexual arrangements. In all the discussions, the first and primary order of business is a review of the state of empirical knowledge, although there are curiosities -- e.g., why this work, devoted to elucidation of the state of scientific knowledge about sex, should cite with approval, of all people, Freud.

Where Posner ventures into normative analysis he has very interesting things to say. For example, the discussion of the sale of reproductive services ("surrogate motherhood") is acute; Posner nicely highlights the shortcomings in the positions of the most interesting thinkers writing on that subject. Nevertheless, Posner's own views are curiously truncated in places. His arguments never explain why contracts for reproductive services should be subject to specific performance. Why is the proper remedy for breach of contract an order enforcing it rather, as is the normal case in the U.S. for contract breaches, monetary compensation? It's an odd position for Posner particularly, who has been is so closely associated with efficiency breach doctrine in contracts -- the idea being, very roughly, that contracts need not be enforced when it is economically inefficient to do so.

There are a number of places in "Sex and Reason" where Posner's arguments are inconsistent or incomplete in some significant respect. For example, early on Posner discusses rape as including sex obtained through deception (p. 81). Later in the book, in the chapter "Coercive Sex", he defines rape as coercive sex. Identifying rape with coercive sex is inconsistent with including either sex obtained by deception (e.g., regarding identity, health status, or nature of acts) or sex with incapacitated persons (e.g., the intoxicated or unconscious). On a more theoretical level, one may be hesitant to accept some of Posner's normative commitments. It is important to keep in mind that Posner is offering offers an economic analysis of sexuality; by "economic analysis" he means one in which conduct is rational if not irrational as determined relative to social ends (p. 213). Hence "Sex and Reason" is largely concerned with PATTERNS of conduct, not instances. Posner does not go much beyond examining the rationality of various social arrangements with respect to control of sexuality and reproduction. If one keeps Posner's broad focus in mind, then within the constraints outlined in the book, sense can be made of the notion that sexuality, within certain limits, is subject to social construction.

Posner does not entirely eschew moral commentary. His own views are a version of Mill's "harm principle" liberalism. And Posner does not hesitate to point to the sillier aspects of current U.S. legal restrictions on sex. But there is an underlying tension in this and several other of Posner's works with respect to his overall normative position. On the one hand, Posner has a rather skeptical view of morality. It is founded for him in intuitions that are, perhaps, immutable, or at least not subject to rational argument (e.g., permissible infanticide; see pp. 230-31). Maybe this is a kind of Wittgensteinian view of morality. On the other hand, assuming the sort of immovable intuitions about basic moral issues, it is unclear just what the point of economic analysis is or could be. At most it could model outcomes without explaining them. But irrationality, in this sense, would not be a reason for reform. My own suspicion is that there is an unresolved set of problems with moral epistemology here.

A Mind-opening Book

Reading Judge Posner's book is a humbling experience. Much of what I thought I knew about sex is a tiny fraction of what this book has documented, analyzed and argued.
I have known that many early Greek luminaries, such as Plato, Socrates and Sophocles were homosexual. This book puts these mere points of interest in a wholly different light by exploring the social settings of the early Grecian (Athenian) society: that the early marriages were not companionate, that women in that society, including wives, were sequestered, that boys and girls were raised separately, and not by the mother, that pederasty was almost an accepted social institution, etc.
I have always believed that homosexuality is a rooted genetically, although it is not binary factor. This book puts homosexuality, through the use of the "Kinsey scale", into different degrees and clearly distinguishes between homosexual tendency and homosexual activity, and defines the opportunistic homosexual in economic terms. With very simple reasoning, this book explains why urbanization seems (only seems) to foster homosexuality and the emergence of homosexual enclaves such as San Francisco and New York.
This book also explains, again through an economic model, why the black men in this country seem (again, only seem!) to be sexually aggressive and promiscuous, whereas sexual abuse of off-spring children (girls) have a higher incidence in white households.
I am also enlightened on how the child birth, which in the early days often caused the death of the mother, created serial polygamy (polygyny, to be more precise) and that the widower, who were older and more economically established men, puts young bachelors at a competitive disadvantage in securing a mate, especially in the early industrial society where the cost of marriage was high.
I am enlightened to the role of the Church as the promoter of companionate marriage and how its fairly profound effect on this social institution. And also why the Church "overtly condoned prostitution and covertly condoned monastic homosexuality."
There are many other issues, such as infanticide, fornication, adultery, divorce, coercive and abusive sex, pornography, adoption, surrogate child-bearing ... to which Judge Posner gave interesting and informative treatment.
The thoroughness with which Judge Posner analyzes a problem is unmatched. Although I am not always completely convinced by his reasoning (because some of the arguments are necessarily qualitative and intuitive,) but the plausibility is striking. And I am frequently amazed by the different angles with which he looks at an issue, and the amount of facts and data he brings forth to support his views. When facts contradict what his theory predicts, he graciously points that out. In the conclusion of the book, Judge Posner, with scholarly grace and modesty, points out that his work was exploratory, a learning process for himself, and was not being presented as definitive.
Judge Posner's writing style is very good. The book is never boring, though some of the information and arguments are repeated due to the inter-relatedness of many of the issues. Throughout the book, the Judge's remarkable analytic skill can be felt. At one point, the Judge mercilessly took apart the New Jersey Supreme Court's opinion of the Baby M case (Stern vs. Whitehead) and clearly showed how judges, lacking knowledge on the subject matter and often ignorant about economics, proceeded to vote their own prejudices, and substituted rhetoric and sloppy logic for judicial analysis. This one episode, which clearly illustrates the reason he wrote this book, as he stated in the introduction, is worth the price of the book.

How many judges are as good as Judge Posner? Since he has published so much, chances of his ever being nominated and confirmed to be a justice of the High Court must be pretty slim, considering the infamous borking effect. This is just as well. I wishfully think his publications probably has a greater influence on the society, especially the legal community, than if he were appointed a justice.
Having read several of Judge Posner's books, I mark him down as one of a handful of top-notch intellectuals in my estimation.

A Major Breakthrough

In this book Richard Posner manages to singlehandedly turn legal scholarship on its head. He examines human sexuality from a myriad of perspectives--literature, sociology, evolutionary biology, morality, and history. He does so with impeccable scholarship, demonstrating not only that he is widely read in these diverse areas, but that he has something to say. The book is worth reading for just that.
But Posner's more impressive accomplishment is his singular approach to the regulation of human sexual behavior. His rational choice, economics of law approach is compelling. Even if you are not entirely convinced, Posner builds a powerful case for both academic and policy debate.
Posner's approach contrasts with most legal scholarship, which is lifeless and rarely bothers to consider the social sciences. Posner's book shows the intergal link between law, politics, and economics. It is also approachable and direct. You can't read Sex and Reason and not feel your deeply held beliefs directly challenged by a kind and discerning intellect. He is passionate, articulate, and eminently readable.
Posner's book has become a lightening rod in legal circles and is a must read for any serious reader in the area.

I think this is a great tool for new teachers like myself. Buehl tells you the advantages for each method as well as offering ideas for some graphic organizers. I believe you can safely ignore the criticism that this book is only good for graphic organizers. I've used and referred colleagues to this book for several years now. What I particularly appreciate about this book is that it's not bogged down with endless research and personal anecdotes. If you've taught for any amount of time and are any good at your profession, you really begin to look for books that get to the point and share things that are practical and useful. This book is just that. There are many good strategies organized in this book for you to use with students.

Cute calendar

Honestly hard to tell if I like it since Amazon saw fit to fold it in two and stuff it in a small box along with smaller items. Big crease through the middle. Pictures are pretty much same as last year's calendar. If you liked 2016 Pusheen calendar then you should like this one.

Another Year, Another Wonderful Pusheen Calendar

I love Pusheen. She is the cat that represents most of us: she watches Netflix, eats junk food, lies around on the weekend—sometimes all at once.

This calendar is the same 12" x 12" size as last year; which expands to 12" W x 24" H when opened up. It's printed on quality paper and won't rip when you're flipping the pages every month. There is one image to represent September to December 2016, and you get twelve new images for the twelve months of 2017. The calendar is shipped with a piece cardboard inside to prevent bending during shipment.

My only minor issue is that the twelve stickers you get are exactly the same as last year. I was hoping for different ones to stick on different things. The stickers are still a bonus so I'm glad to have this extra.

If you love Pusheen (and how can you not?), get this calendar for 2017. Recommended.

This calendar is a must have for any Pusheen fan! The images are super cute and the card stock seems durable and well made. The first page has September - December 2016 printed on it so you don't have to wait until January to hang it. The best part is the sticker sheet! They are definitely collectible, as I haven't seen any like it available yet. If you love all things Pusheen you will love this calendar!

Very Interesting!

This by far has been one of the most eye opening accounts of gang life in the hard streets of Los Angeles, CA. Growing up and knowing many of those places related in this book I can only imagine what Shakur went through. The book shows us right from the start the lack of attention and love that many children experience growing up in these kind of communities and the lack of resources to stray them away from the choice of becoming a gang-member. Though this is not an excuse and Shakur recounts this, none the less he decided to take that route. Receiving the name Monster after brutally beating someone up to the point where the newspapers said, it "was a monster" who must have committed such a brutal act we are taken from his early years to those of a hard core gang-member. What I really liked about this book was how well it was written and how the author held nothing back. But what was most interesting is how he opens his eyes to the violence and lifestyle he chose to live and changes everything around while in prison. I do want to advice that this book has strong language, but it is a very interesting account to the life of a hardcore gangster and his transformation.

About the Author
Shojiro Sugiyama is known by his colleagues as a maverick. He teaches traditional Karate in a very contemporary way. Even though he teaches traditional Karate, almost every one of his approaches to training are different than traditional methods. His intent is to make Karate easier to comprehend and learn.

Unfortunately many Karate instructors use a "Monkey see Monkey do" approach to teaching - Sugiyama doesn't. If a college is a place where one goes to learn how to think then the Sugiyama Dojo (school) is where one goes to teach oneself Karate through thought and reason. Sugiyama encourages questions and debate. His job as teacher is to help his students gain a better understanding of Karate and guide their learning so that they can improve. He believes that eventually every student should become better than the teacher.

Similarly, Sugiyama's books reflect his unique approach to Karate. 25 Shoto-Kan Kata was the first book to use three dimensional drawings. His other books also break new ground and continue to develop the art of Karate. He believes that just as the student should surpass the teacher his books will eventually become obsolete (or collector's items) as new books are written. This constant drive toward innovation and development marks Sugiyama as a one of a kind Karate instructor.

Shojiro Sugiyama was born in Tokyo in 1929. In 1954, after training in two other styles of Karate, he began studying with the Japan Karate Association (Yotsuya), Japan. In 1963, he was invited to come to Chicago to teach Karate. He continues to teach Karate at his dojo located on the north side of Chicago.

An excellent reference

In "25 Shotokan Kata", Sugiyama has brought the complex movements of Shotokan kata to their simplest form for learning. This book is an excellent reference for two reasons:

1) It breaks down every kata into its individual movements, and illustrates each in clear, simple diagrams

2) It contains instructions for each step that not only tell you what to do (e.g., "pivot clockwise on your left foot"), but also what you are doing ("grab his hand and break his arm with your elbow").

There is no substitute for training in a Dojo, but "25 Shotokan Kata" makes an excellent reference guide, and is in my top three recommended books for Japanese Traditional Karateka.

The price for this book may seem high, but when you weigh the knowledge within it becomes an extremely good investment and well worth the money for anyone wishing to learn--and understand--Shotokan kata.

Best book on Shotokan kata

It is not obvious from the product description, but a major feature of this book is that it not only illustrates each technique of the Shotokan kata, but also describes how fast each technique should be executed and how long to pause between each movement. I am not aware of any other book that tells you this, a real help when learning.
Although very good, it does not go into detail on correct execution of each technique. You will need another book (or preferably good instructor) for that. Otherwise it is the best book on Shotokan kata available.

As karate can not be learned from book because it is more practical and have to join the Karate club to learn properly. But this book is nice reference for doing your kata. Once you learn katas from your Master (sensei), it is good book for reviewing and refining your kata steps.
We are practicing Sotokan Karate in Richmond, Kentucky. Our instructors use this book as good reference. I am glad that I bought this book and anybody serious about learning of Shotokan Karate, I recommend this book.

È un giorno di ottobre del 1882 e Josef Breuer, quarantenne geniale psichiatra, medico personale a Vienna di artisti e filosofi come Brahms, Brücke e Brentano, è al Caffè Sorrento in compagnia di una giovane donna che non conosce, ma che ha avuto l’impudenza di convocarlo nel rinomato caffè veneziano per una «questione di estrema urgenza» in cui ne andrebbe addirittura del «futuro della filosofia tedesca».

La donna si chiama Lou Salomé ed è di inusuale bellezza: fronte poderosa, luminosi occhi azzurri, labbra piene e sensuali.

Nonostante la temperatura pungente del mattino, si è tolta il manto di pelliccia e, guardandolo direttamente negli occhi, con voce ferma gli ha detto di temere per la vita di un suo caro amico: Friedrich Nietzsche, il pensatore tedesco che, secondo Richard Wagner, ha «regalato al mondo un’opera senza pari». Poi, posando leggermente la mano guantata sulla sua, ha aggiunto che il filosofo è in preda a una profonda prostrazione. Uno stato che si manifesta con una moltitudine impressionante di sintomi: emicrania, parziale cecità, nausea, insonnia, febbri, anoressia, e che lo porta ad assumere pericolose dosi di morfina...

Così, attraverso la voce della musa della Vienna fin de siècle, Josef Breuer, stimato medico ebreo, futuro padre della psicanalisi, uomo dal comportamento ineccepibile e, tuttavia, oppresso anche dai legami e dalle convenzioni della vita borghese e matrimoniale e profondamente turbato dalla bella Bertha, sua paziente da due anni, apprende della disperazione estrema di colui che diverrà il suo più illustre paziente. Breuer, infatti, sottoporrà il filosofo alle sue cure, basate sulla convinzione che la guarigione del corpo passi attraverso quella dell’anima. E tra lui e Nietzsche, nel corso di numerose sedute, si instaurerà un dialogo serrato e coinvolgente durante il quale Breuer cercherà di arrivare alle radici del male oscuro del filosofo e di indurlo ad aprirgli il cuore.
