Not happy with the Kindle version.

I was happy to see a Christmas Real Book with contemporary christmas songs but I'm sorely disapointed at the Kindle version. They didn't bother to format it for Kindle. So I basically have a book with tons of half even quarter pages. A song that should be one page long is 4 half pages long. That's especially inconvenient if your actually using this book to read music as your playing because you have to turn it every 4 staves. Very upset and I'm going to see if I can get my money back for it. If you're a musician reading this book to perform, even just practice, Don't Buy It for Kindle! Just wait for a physical copy to come in the mail.

Lyrics are too small when used in Kindle app on an iPad Retina Display

I'm a working musician and have used the RealBook series for many years when I play requests of Standards that I might not have memorized yet. The RealBooks have transferred very well to the iPad format. I display them in PDF and have no difficulty seeing the melody lines and chord symbols.

The problem for me in The Real Christmas Book C Edition is the small size of the lyrics. They were absolutely unreadable from within the Kindle app on my iPad. No amount of tweaking with the Kindle apps settings helped in any way. I don't know if they would have been any more legible had instead bought the book through Apple's iBooks.

The solution that I came up involved six time consuming steps: First, open The Real Christmas Book C Edition within the Kindle app on my MacBookPro laptop. Second, use the Kindle apps display controls to make the music and lyrics larger while still having as much of the song display on one page if possible. Third, use the Screen Capture feature of Mac OSX to select the music and lyrics of each page while leaving out the overly large border surrounding the music staff. Fourth, convert and rename the resulting tiff file into a PDF document using Preview (in some cases had to create a multi page PDF doc from individual tiff files). Fifth, place the resulting PDFs into DropBox. Sixth, open the PDFs in DropBox on my iPad and re-open them into GoodReader the app that I use to organize and display music charts, and lyrics on my iPad.

This was very time consuming and if some thought had been given to the end user of this product, would have been unnecessary! I was able to process 13 songs total from this book to a readable state to use in performances during the Christmas season before running out of time. This worked out alright since I already have a large collection of holiday songs that are music only (no lyrics) to help fill up a gig. Plus there are many songs that I already know both the words and music to, so I don't need to look at the iPad at all.

Before next year's Christmas season comes around, I'll sit down and go through my six step process again in the hopes of adding to my library of Christmas songs where I can comfortably read both the music and the lyrics.

As a side note, the melody lines and chord changes in this book were very good and in some cases really hip, giving the player the opportunity to perform many of these tunes in a slightly jazzier style if desired.

Love the book!!!
It was delivered without delay and I've had nothing but enjoyment playing the Christmas classics I love the most.
This book in my opinion is a classic and a must have for any piano player of any age or experience level who enjoys The sounds if Christmas.
I've been playing since I'm 21; I'm now 52 and will continue for years to practice using this book!

A new masterpiece

I saw this play in St. Louis and was astounded by it. After the first act, you realize you're watching a well-wrought play, populated by strong, quirky characters, interesting situations, and fascinating, complex relationships, all the things you expect from Wilson. But it doesn't seem like the best play he's ever written, as quite a few people have claimed. With works like Fifth of July, Burn This, and Redwood Curtain in his canon, Best Ever is quite a claim. Then you see Act II. And you realize they might just be right. All the groundwork laid in Act I pays off in such abundantly satisfying ways. And there's so much more to this play than you thought. There is the temptation to fault Book of Days for its loose construction and seemingly scattershot laying out of scenes, but that's where its real beauty lies, in the poetry of the ordinary, in the unexpected turns life takes, in the randomness of living. The organization of the play is in its characters and in its themes of ambition, the need to know, and the fear of change. With plainly theatrical devices sprinkled throughout the show - characters narrating the show, watching from the sides, stepping out of scenes to directly address the audience - this is not trying to be kitchen sink drama. It is a play uniquely American and just as uniquely Lanford Wilson. It is what it says it is, a book of days, a diary, a story to be told, with characters at once good and bad, admirable and not. It's a snapshot of small town American life at the end of the millennium, in some ways not so different from big city life, in some ways light years away.

Vintage Material

Landford Wilson's Book of Days is a real play. Nothing fake about it. First off, his characters are so in deep and contrast with eachother that it makes it a great read. Most of the first act is basically a charming exposition until it nose-dives into a dark and twisted conflict (sorry, read the play). There is a lot of language, however, but it makes a profound impact in what is being told in the story. The way Wilson has each character being a member of the chorus pulls you into the play. The ending is the best: it has you thinking that this could be happening in your own back yard. It can also be debated that this is in fact a tragedy instead of drama. Read this play!
This was a very hard play to put down. In matter of fact, I didn't.

About the Author
John Sussex retired after a 33-year career in the financial markets. He lives in Basildon, Essex, the place of his birth. After leaving his local comprehensive school with few qualifications he began working as an accounts clerk in the City of London at the age of 16. Sussex went on to become a highly successful trader at the London International Financial Futures Exchange (Liffe) and set up his own brokerage business. He also served on the board of Liffe. He is married and has two children.

Joe Morgan is a financial journalist who lives in London. He has served as a correspondent for the Times and has written extensively about the latest developments in trading technology and the financial markets. Morgan was inspired by the idea of revealing to a mass audience the hidden reality of the world of high finance after landing his first job as a capital markets reporter. He has a Postgraduate Diploma in Magazine Journalism from Cardiff University. This is his first book.

Wicked book about UK London old trading pits!

Although this is a book about the old London trading pits, since this is Amazon.com, most of you reading will be Yanks and more familiar with CME or CBOT pits in Chicago..

Awesome book describing both the general day to day life in futures pits, although main focus is on the London LIFFE, it mentions the Singapore SIMEX (where Nick Neeson blew up Barings bank overnight, UK's oldest bank) and also mentions Chicago pits

Ultimately both US pits and UK trading pits shared the same fate, as electronic trading took over. The war stories and day-to-day life on pits in different continents were very similar.. and anyone familiar with Chicago pits will immediately find many parallels to London.

The author started on the LIFFE floor on day one they opened in 1982 (hence the title) and he was there till the very end 98/2000. He details the changes that took place and mentions the unique characters and comical moments of working in this environment, where business meetings were held in local pubs (bars), and quick witted traders had footballer-celebrity-lifestyles.

I am an 'electronic' trader, I have several friends who were pit traders in London though I was myself too young and the pits had closed by the time I started trading, I felt like I missed out on an amazing era.. now I can only read about it!

Personally for me, as a new breed of trader, I felt I'd been filled in with an important history lesson about my line of business and also lessons on how our world can suddenly change.

Overall: Great book. Entertaining Definitely worth a read.. and nicely written.
