The New Kid On The Block Is Kickin' Art!

Throughout, impressions of street noise shape writers' sense of place and perception of modern social relations. As Boutin shows, the din of the Cris contrasted economic abundance with the disparities of the capital, old and new traditions, and the vibrancy of street commerce with an increasing bourgeois demand for quiet. In time, peddlers who provided the soundtrack for Paris's narrow streets yielded to modernity, with its taciturn shopkeepers and wide-open boulevards, and the fading songs of the Cris became a dirge for the passing of old ways.

About the Author
Geoffrey G. Parker is a professor of engineering at Dartmouth College (effective July 2016) and a visiting scholar at the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy. He has been a professor of management science at Tulane University since 1998.

Marshall W. Van Alstyne is one of the world’s foremost scholars of information business models, is a visiting scholar at the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy, and holds a tenured professorship at Boston University.

Sangeet Paul Choudary is a C-level strategy advisor to executives globally and an Entrepeneur-in-Residence at the INSEAD Business School, and is ranked among the top 30 emerging business thinkers globally by Thinkers50.

' This book is the single best introduction I have read to Platform Businesses

Every so often I lead workshops on pricing strategy. For the past several years I have been telling people that if you are in a conventional business (what Parker, Van Alstyne and Choudary call a 'pipeline business') and you are competing against a platform business you have already lost. Pipeline businesses do not have winning strategies against multisided markets, or as this book calls them 'platform businesses.' This book is the single best introduction I have read to Platform Businesses. If you use (and if you are reading this you do use a Platform Business, Amazon), are working on or may compete against a Platform Business you need to read this book. I have been recommending it to my own team at TeamFit.co to my investees and to companies that come to me for pricing advice.

Platform Revolution has many strong points.It explains the feedback loops and network effects (positive and negative) that drive platform business dynamics, the chapter on monetization is excellent and the chapter on governance is a must read (I think I will send a copy to Vancouver's mayor). The book even has a short section on data ownership, which is likely to emerge as a major social issue over the next decade (ask yourself, why does the company I work for own my employee records, why don't I own them too!).

Platform Revolution is not perfect of course. My main complaint is the lack of useful diagrams. The book is sketch poor and I found that I had to keep a notebook and pencil beside me as I read to make sure I was following all of the interactions of forces and to give me some mnemonics to remember what I was reading. This is good in that it helped me to build up my own mental models, but I would prefer to have shared sketches that I could use in business planning with other people. I also found the characterization of the two sides of a market as 'producers' and 'consumers' limiting. This is not a useful model to describe many two-sided market interactions, as the authors themselves noticed when they talked about dating sites (dating sites are a good thing to study to learn a lot about very dynamic two-sided markets). I also found the discussion of Porter's Five Forces to be simplistic and dismissive. This seems to be an MIT thing as other people associated with MIT have the same blinkers. A more useful approach would be to look at how each aspect of the five forces gets drawn into platform markets.

There are some other good books to read on this theme. I would also recommend Platform Ecosystems by Amrit Tiwana, Matchmakers by David Evans and Modern Monopolies by Moazed and Johnson. But Platform Revolution is an excellent place to start.

Read this book to keep up

Disclaimers: I do not know the authors; I did buy the book from Amazon; I have no financial stake in the book; I am not a robot reviewer. My summary is that this book is essential reading for anyone who is part of any of the digital revolutions going on today. This includes those in business and those in information technology. You need to include the "platform mentality" in your business planning. I didn't give the book five stars for three reasons. One, a few references in the text seemed really out of date. Apparently no one caught those in the editing process. Second, in truth, the platform revolution started quite a while ago. Companies like CH Robinson have been successfully using it in the logistics business years before Facebook. Finally, all is not roses in platforms. Who is going to guarantee the quality of Uber cars and drivers, for example? Online reviews (like this one) are not 100% reliable and only a few bad apples can ruin the barrel. But it is an exciting time and an exciting book.

Timely broad survey of platforms, mechanisms, and issues

This a scholarly but very readable survey of platforms and their foundations, with broad scope and modest depth. As a technologist and entrepreneur I found this a very good way to quickly grasp the breadth of platforms and the transformations they cause. If you want a good Platforms 101, you won't be disappointed. This book orients you. If you want implementation details, you'll need to look elsewhere. There are many platform foundations to choose from.

Wonderful story. Fun adventure.

"My place beside you, my blood for yours. Till the Green Ember rises or the end of the world!" So ends the prologue to The Green Ember. What a start! S.D. Smith's debut novel stands in stark contrast to most contemporary middle school fiction. Courage, loyalty, wisdom, and hope abound. Classic virtues are esteemed. It is moral without moralizing. It is dramatic without resorting to preteen angst. It is swashbuckling without glorifying violence. Good is good and evil is evil. Clearly Smith is influenced by Lewis' Narnia, but this isn't derivitive fan fiction. Smith has created a new world that stands on its own inhabited by wonderful and sometimes terrifying characters.

Heather and Picket are young rabbits who are dragged into world events much larger themselves. Their journey begins as their parents are visited by mysterious strangers, and their father hints that the family history may be tinged with intrigue, betrayal, and great pain. Within the first few pages, Smith launches the reader along with Heather and Picket on a fast-paced flight away from their home and headlong toward something momentous. From labyrinths to hidden kingdoms, our heroes travel toward their destiny. Along the way they meet wonderful characters like the unexpectedly capable Smalls whose own path may be more dangerous than theirs. There is the dark and mysterious Helmer whose mastery of the arts of war draw Picket out from the prison of crippling self-indulgence and sets him on a trajectory of great danger and self-sacrifice. The wise Maggie O'Sage and Uncle Wilfred set hope firmly within their hearts.

Despite living in a blighted world surrounded by foes and treachery, Heather, Picket, and their new friends hold firmly to that hope. Till the Green Ember rises or the End of the World!

The Green Ember is at its core simply a good story. I recommend it as a read-aloud for younger children or a self-serve novel for middle schoolers. The reading level is comparable to the Chronicles of Narnia. My small kids love it. Rabbits with swords! What's not to love?

Designed For Children, Written For Everyone

A great story, written well. It's full of intrigue, adventure, action, mystery, surprise and struggle, but with a good mixture of humor and playfulness. Written for children but in a way adults will enjoy.

The characters (the good guys) depict personal growth, sacrifice, humility, loyalty, trust, wisdom and dedication. The bad guys do what we expect bad guys to do. The story encourages us to visualize a future we cannot see, believe in it and work toward it.

Problems are created and resolved. Readers are filled with empathy for those being wronged and disgust for those causing it. You'll easily recognize and identify with the characters, the strong, the weak, the frustrated and the struggling.

A few phrases I loved:

"You can choose what you believe, but you can't change what's true.'
"This is a place where people make and are made."
"You cannot kill and idea. You cannot murder a dream."
And many more.

My favorite: "Like a waterfall letting a tear drop put out a fire."

she would often exclaim how wonderful it was

We gave this to our nine-year-old daughter for Christmas and she polished it off within three days. Throughout her reading of it, she would often exclaim how wonderful it was, and the day she finished it she gave us a rave review as to all of the things that were great about it. I had to restrain her from telling me the whole story because I want to read it myself! My daughter is an avid reader and has liked a lot of books, but her excitement over The Green Ember was the greatest I've seen. She said she would like to write S. D. Smith to let him know he needs to write a sequel.

A good read. A welcome addition to your arsenal.

We are often faced with the challenges of operating the plethora of tools available in today's advanced DAW's, and there are a lot of technical publications geared at just that. Although this book glances at some of those specifics, it doesn’t go into them too deeply. What it does is look at recording conceptually.

The author has provided three main sections; corrective editing, creative editing, and restorative editing. Each section is comprised of several chapters. Even though the book centers more on the theoretical, at the end of every chapter it concludes with a hands-on approach. Comprehensively enough the hands on sections cover each of the most popular DAW’s mainly Pro tools, Logic One, Cubase, and Studio One.

My first computer-based recording system comprised of a Windows DOS based 286 with a MIDI card that would record digital based instruments, mainly my Roland synth while at the same time producing an SMTPE time code in order to sync with my Sony 4 track reel to reel tape recorder which would handle all the analog instruments such as guitar and voice. The author reflects on that era and how it evolved into the here and now.

This book being grounded in theory as well as some hands-on is a good treatise for the intermediary technician looking for a way to conceptually approach their art. The author has a lighter prose style and understands the material so well that his conceptual jargon is easy to understand in light of the application he is trying to illustrate. All in all an enjoyable read as well as an enlightened one

This is an excellent technique instructional

First, this is NOT intended for audio recording and editing neophytes!

It is for the experienced editor who wants to learn advanced techniques for corrective, creative and restorative editing. While primarily oriented toward Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Cubase and Studio One, the techniques can be applied to any moderately sophisticated DAW (Digital Audio Workstation). You may have to search for the specific controls in other programs.

The book is principally text with a few black and white illustrations which some have found fault with. I don't: this is a book filled with specific instructions and explanations of what you are doing a certain thing. It is not a learn-by-pictures kind of thing. It is a teaching manual, not a picture book.

For example, the (very detailed, very interesting) chapter on time-stretching has twelve solid pages of explanation on what time-stretching is before it moves to ten pages of application specific instructions.

For the audio technician who knows something, but not everything, this is an excellent technique instructional. For those who are just starting out, look elsewhere.
