Overall a good book with some problems.

Overall, the book does a great job of covering the many areas of System Safety. It is the best book I've found on the topic.
However, this year I started teaching from this book. And when you teach you really discover the shortcomings of a text. It is frustrating when the author uses acronyms without explaination. I've also been running into minor math errors or oversights in formulas (e.g. defining a function f(x) and using 't' in the equation as the independent variable).
I think the attempt to cover all of the material resulted in a brief overview of these areas and took away from the quality of coverage. Still, I haven't seen a better book on the topic and if the worst you can say is that it could have been better, thats not bad.

Decent executive level intro

While starting to show its age, Moriarty's text is a sound introduction to the executive-level or program manager as to what his safety guys are doing, why they hold up his schedule and why he pays them so much.

For the supervised safety practitioner the text introduces common concepts but doesn't really do modern, embedded control systems justice.

The text is expensive and not what I would consider value for money.

Awesome recipe book even if not a raw food person or going through detox or want to

I came upon this book in my local natural food store and was instantly drawn to the photos and its simplicity.

First thing, In your mind, change the title to WHOLE FOOD RECIPES if you have a problem with the wording.

I say that because each time I handed someone the book to go through, they instantly went into "I'm not a raw foodie", I don't eat raw food", or "I'm not going through detox nor do I want to go through that".

Then I showed them the pictures and read the ingredients to them, and their eyes lit up and they started to get hungry and want what I was describing.

This book has awesome photos to go along with the recipes to show you what is possible when eating Whole unprocessed food.
And BTW, some of it is processed, by you, with whole natural ingredients.

This book totally helped turn me back in the direction I used to walk regarding how I ate. I have made several of the items in this book and have passed around for sampling. So far, everyone loves what I have given them and is surprised when I tell them its still live food, like the cookies.

I have now purchased this book as a gift for 3 other people and they have adopted healthier eating in their diet without going through detox. However let me say, that now they all know they need it because they feel better when they eat or drink this kind of food.

I will also add here that about a month after I started eating from this book and other similar recipes, people started commenting on what was different with my face and skin. Just saying....

Also at this price, you can't go wrong.

Great recipes, beautiful artwork

I am not 100% raw - or anywhere close. But I do find the cuisine and way of food preparation to be one of the most interesting and creative. In this sense, I love to collect raw food books to see the ways in which people are approaching raw foods. This book has a range of recipes from simple to complex. Not the most comprehensive book in terms of volume or number of recipes... my favorite author is Ani Phyo; but a book with beautiful photos, some new recipes - and of course the inspiration and reminder about why raw food preparation is so fun, challenging, and creative.

I love raw dishes and this cookbook includes some really good choices. It's already my go-to book for Puttanesca sauce and I love the nut "rice" and crunch salad. Looking forward to trying some more recipes

Excessive underlining in the first chapters

Excellent but with some flaws

`The Archaeology of Greece' is an excellent book to introduce you to the numerous treasures the Greek world has left behind. Aside from plain information about the artefacts, the book also pays a lot of attention to the social background of the time. As the modern scope of archaeology lies mainly in explaining the past rather than just discovering pots and pans, this information is very welcome. Overall I find that Biers has done an excellent job in writing the book. His information is thorough and detailed and you never get the feeling that something is unclear. The illustrations are superb: you'll find a lot of nice pictures inside that are not just decoration but an essential part of the text.
Yet, I take one star off because the presentation of the book isn't always as good. First, there is very little `division' in each chapter. Each of the ten chapters has a division into art, architecture, sculpture, painting and mosaics and miscellaneous stuff. But it is not enough. For example, one of the chapters is about a few late-classical sculptors, among them Praxiteles, Skopas and Lysippos. All you see though, is one long batch of text under the header `sculpture'. Especially for students like me, it would be so much more helpful to divide `sculpture' into more parts and put more heads in the text, for example one with `Praxiteles' and one with `Lysippos', etcetera. Now it sometimes becomes unclear what the author is really talking about. Additionally, the author gives a lot of information about different sculptors and styles, but he seldom compares them. And IF he does, the lack of any heads makes the information very difficult to find.
Another strange thing was the connection between pictures and text. It often happens that the picture a text refers to, is one or two pages ahead of the text itself. So if page 167 refers to figure 9.25, you have to turn the page before you know what it is about. I think this problem could have been avoided easily with some better editing. Alas, the book has some typographical problems but on the level of information it's very useful and informative. I just hope these flaws will be removed in the next edition, but still recommend the book.

Good introduction and up-to-date scholarship

If you want a nice introduction to the archaeology of the Greek world, this book is a must. With up-to-date archaeological discoveries and theories, lovely pictures, and useful information on all subjects, one truly feels enlightened about the subject through reading this book. A must for all!

Possibly an industry standard Crime Analysis Text

This will be a review of edition 2 as this is the edition I used. There is an edition 3. Given what I know of this book, from attending a presentation by Prof. Boba, and knowing something of her standing within the community; I am confident that edition 3 maintains her standards and improves on the utility of the text.

Crime Analysis with Crime Mapping is the selected text for an online course offering by one of, if not the major professional crime analysis Association. I do not believe that this association is in the business of making product recommendations and I do not have the right to speak for the Association. Even so I suggest that the continued use of this text by this organization constitutes affirmation of the value of Prof. Boba's works beyond any editorial opinion from me.

The field of crime analysis is relatively new, still seeking standards and very much growing. Prof. Boba documents that crime analysis has roots going back at least as far as 1900. The term was defined as far back as 1970s. However the presence of law enforcement positions titled 'crime analyst' and law enforcement units dedicated to crime analysis is still not universal. I have met many people in the field of crime analysis who got there and got there recently by assignment rather than prior training. That is they work in law enforcement somebody walked up to them and said "congratulations you're a crime analyst". This text provides excellent introductory and intermediate level instructions on the vocabulary of crime analysis and practical insights into the practice crime analysis I strongly recommend this as one of a very small number of books that such a lucky person should study when assigned to be a Crime Analyst.

On the chance you are not familiar with the term crime analysis and are looking at this book while thinking of such television shows as NCIS; crime analysis may not be what you think. Crime analysts are not laboratory technicians dealing with machines like mass spectrometers. Crime analyst deal with a variety of issues mostly associated with data. Typical crime analyst duties may range from producing crime bulletins to more highly technical activities such as creating statistical and mapping software. It is not unknown to find the same person working duties across this spectrum in a single workweek.
Based on my own experience and preferences I would have liked more time spent on the subject of crime mapping. This is a differance on a matter of degree rather than substance.

At $60 for this copy and more for the newer edition this is not an inexpensive book. My copy was purchased through Amazon as a secondhand book. To Amazon's credit it arrived in exactly the condition promised. Even with my additional use this copy still has life in it.

It's a textbook, but one of the better ones

As textbooks go, this is on the high end of usefulness. Boba Santos is clearly an expert in the field, so the information is as good as you'd expect. The real winner here is the layout of the information - it flows logically, it's easy to follow. This is a complex field, and this text serves as an excellent primer for an introductory course.

This was a text for a crime analysis class I took and was not interested in prior to. However, the text was really interesting and offered a lot of useful information. I think Rachel Santos did a fantastic job presenting the information as well as the research for it. Anyone looking into crime analysis would benefit from reading this book.

Excellent readable overview of oceanography

This book is a textbook, but it is written in a converstaional, easy, readable style. But for those who want it, it also gets into the technical nitty gritty (or u can just skip the equations if u want). It is also a rare mix (as the author says was his aim in the intro) of physics, chemistry and biology. I wish I had bought it before I started off writing my own Ocean Surfaces book, but I 'll definitely be referencing the author in the next edition!

Very good book, very good price

The book is a well-written introduction to the science of oceanography. The author focuses on the modern ocean, largely omitting coverage of geologic history included in many introductory texts. The illustrations are primarily line drawings, carefully selected and in many cases redrawn specifically for this book. The text provides a clearly-presented view of the biological productivity of the ocean, including examples of exploitation and vulnerability to global change. The affordable price makes this an attractive choice as a textbook.

I first looked at an oceanography textbook, and it had a lot of interesting details, but what I really needed to know was how the ocean works. Mark Denny explains it as if we were having a conversation. Superb.

The liberalization of the economy has resulted in growth, yet not necessarily development, and India has acquired a new global status, becoming an emerging power intent on political and economic partnerships with Asia and the West. The traditional Nehruvian system is giving way to a less cohesive though more active India, a country that has become what it is against all odds. Jaffrelot maps this tumultuous journey, exploring the role of religion, caste, and politics in determining the fabric of a modern democratic state.

About the Author

Christophe Jaffrelot is research director at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in Paris and teaches South Asian politics and history at Sciences Po (Paris), where he served as director from 2000 to 2008. Arguably one of the world's most respected writers on Indian society and politics, he has published many works, including The Hindu Nationalist Movement and Indian Politics, 1925 to the 1990s; India's Silent Revolution: The Rise of the Lower Castes in North India; and Dr. Ambedkar and Untouchability: Fighting the Indian Caste System.

This is the Gregg Braden I've Come to Know and Love (through his writing)

I couldn't get into Fractal Time (and his other book written since FT). Even though this book touches upon some of FT book's concepts, this book is vastly different. The Turning Point is a marker in time that is more personal in nature. I love it when Gregg incorporates his personal stories to illustrate points, and this book does just that. Turning Point: Resilience in a Time of Extremes is a comfort manual full of practical wisdom. It's a life-changing survival guide. This guide teaches us (or reinforces) the art of critical thinking by asking questions. It also offers us techniques to get us in a better state of heart coherence to those familiar with Heartmath.

This book could be scary for some - those stuck in past, reminiscing on how things used to be. This book can be slightly jarring. The world has changed, and there is no turning back. This book is a wakeup call. Yet, as scary as that message is, Gregg Braden offers hope, a silver lining.

I've had the opportunity to meet Mr. Braden and he's very authentic, someone you genuinely want to know more about, to soak in his wisdom.

***Note: the book gets a little repetitive from his previous works and a lot of 2012 literature, but it's definitely worth sticking it out.

Gregg Braden Has Already Told Us Most Everything That's in This Book

I am a big fan of Gregg Braden. I've read a good number of his books, have listened to his audio CDs, have watched his DVDs, and I've seen him speak live four times. In listening to him read the audio CD version of this book I kept waiting for him to break new ground, but he told me very little that I hadn't already heard from him. For me the basic summary of what he's telling us in this book is 1) The world is facing multiple major crises, 2) The world is dangerously low on important natural resources, and 3) We all need to come together as a people to live in harmony and solve these major problems. This is all good information, but I've heard it before from him. If you are new to Gregg Braden, or if you haven't read his last book, "Deep Truth", I would recommend getting that book before getting "The Turning Point". I really enjoyed "Deep Truth", and a lot of that information is also discussed in "The Turning Point", too. But there are subjects discussed in "Deep Truth" that had me much more riveted to the book, including Gregg's disclosure that DNA testing has now been done on well-preserved specimens of Neanderthal Man, and there is almost no way that we could have ever evolved from him.

ANOTHER POSITIVE STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION

I am a true admirer of the author's work and original thinking. (See my 5-Star reviews of "Deep Truth" and "Divine Matrix.") At the same time, I was a bit disappointed with this new book as compared with the previous two. The primary message still rings true... we DO live in a universe of connectivity as more and more individuals are coming to accept, but the delivery and support of this critical message is not as powerfully presented as in his past work. Too much repetition. For those of you who have not read his prior work, this book might serve as a good starting point in conceptualizing the notion of a "Universal Intelligence" which is a natural dimension of reality through which all life-forms are intertwined. Braden is a master at describing this under-appreciated state of existence. Also ... though we are getting closer and I remain optimistic in knowing mankind will eventually "get it" long-term ... there is still a lot of work that remains to be done before humanity reaches the "turning point" we all hope to achieve.

Hmm..

It wasn't so much that I disliked the book, but more that I was disappointed by Montmorency...(*mild spoiler alert* if you haven't read the book...though I'm assuming that most of the people reading these reviews have..actually, my review won't make any sense unless you've read the book.:)) Anyway, the reason I gave this book a rating of 4 stars is basically that I was disappointed by how Montmorency's character turned out. I mean, first of all, Tom. I was incredibly disappointed by how Montmorency handled the situation once everyone was aware of his and Tom's relationship, namely that they are father and son. The fact that he repeatedly forgot about Tom was, honestly, kind of pathetic. I mean, even if he hadn't been his son, forgetting that he existed twice was kind of bad. Also, I was kkind of dissappointed that we didn't get to see Montmorency and Tom's reunion after they finally both knew the truth. I thought that Montmorency had matured throughout the book, learned from his mistakes, and was turning out to be a halfway decent man. Instead, he not only forgets about his son, but let's Frank repeat all of his own mistakes as Scarper, and allows a desire for revenge to not only cloud his thinking but also posses Frank. And that brings me to my second issue- Frank. His character by the end of the book is....not good. At all...he has transformed from a charming young man, into....Scarper. And all that is done to resolve this is for Montmorency to tell Tom to handle it.... I mean, I kind of liked the idea of Tom being Frank's George, but at the same time, the fact that he let things get this far, especially when he KNEW how Scarper's negative influences had affected his life was not pleasing. Lastly, I was disappointed as to Montmorency's relationship with Mary... I was rooting for a relationship with Vi, a well rounded character who we knew, versus Mary...a woman who Montmorency, contrary to appearances, really doesn't know that well. That being said, I think that a lot of my issue will be rectified if Ms.Updale writes another book......but I also have to bring up the fact that I haven't seen mention of a 5th Montmorency book anywhere. If there isn't one, then I will have to say that I was really disappointed with the ending, but if this isn't the end, then overall, I thought that it was an engaging book. I wanted to know what was going to happen next, I didn't have to force myself through the book. Basically, in conclusion, I though that it was a pretty good read, and I REALLY hope that she writes another book, if only because I need her to tie up the loose end left in this book ( another one of which is what happens to Vi).((though I have to admit that I would enjoy reading another installment in the series just to find out what happens to Montmorency after that huge cliffhanger at the end. :) ))

It had been a while since I'd read the previous book in the Montmorency series, and so a quick catch-up was in order before I tackled "Montmorency's Revenge." The titular character was once a convict who escaped his past by coming up with an ingenious method of stealing from the wealthy: using the underground sewers as escape routes in and out of their properties. With a myriad of crimes under his belt, Montmorency's soul was saved by the combined efforts of his friends George Fox-Selwyn and Doctor Robert Farcett, two men who put Montmorency's skills to work in the defense of crown and country.

But tragedy struck at the end of Montmorency And The Assassins. After foiling an anarchist plot to blow up the Hippodrome, Montmorency and the Fox-Selwyn family have a mysterious crate delivered. Inside is the body of George Fox-Selwyn, gruesomely preserved in spirits. It was a shocking ending for a series that usually came up in favor of the heroes, and as such, "Montmorency's Revenge" is considerably darker in tone.

Set in the year 1901 as Queen Victoria lies on her death-bed, Montmorency and his friends are still in mourning for their friend, a group that includes George's brother Duke Fox-Selwyn and his wife Beatrice, his sons Alexander and Francis, the former-prostitute and land-lady Vi and her son Tom, and Doctor Farcett. All of them want to do something to bring George's killer to justice, but Montmorency and Francis are especially impatient to seek revenge on the man they know is responsible: the anarchist leader Antonio Moretti.

But an opportunity is on the horizon. Inspector Howard from Scotland Yard visits the family and calls upon Montmorency's experience to help him keep an eye on several Italian anarchists that may strike during the funeral of Queen Victoria. With Tom's reports that there's been a strange man hanging around the property asking questions, Montmorency jumps at the chance.

But the family has an added problem in the form of Doctor Farcett. Over the course of the past few years, he's a shadow of the man he was, who blames himself for several unfortunate deaths and has fostered a preoccupation over cleanliness that borders on obsession. Montmorency comes up with a plan that will kill two birds with one stone: getting help for Farcett, and allowing Duke Fox-Selwyn's youngest son Francis to accompany him. Farcett will be admitted to a mental hospital under Francis's name, whilst Francis will change his name and physical appearance and join Montmorency in the search for anarchists.

Francis is eager to seek revenge for his uncle's death, only to find that the usual police procedure is painfully slow. Though his betters lecture to him about justice and balance, he's only really interested in one thing: killing the man who murdered his beloved uncle. Montmorency is only marginally better in this regard, and realizes with dawning horror at the resurgence of his criminal alter-ego Scarper. Only this time, Scarper is the name that Francis acquires, and Montmorency can only watch as his young ward falls to the same foibles that he once did in his younger years.

As always, Eleanor Updale's prose is beautifully clear and precise, but there is something a bit lacking in this latest outing. Despite the title, there is very little "revenge" in the novel, and the major theme at work is that of the conflict between personal desires and public duties, instead of a more indepth look at the soul-destroying lust for vengeance. For the most part, Montmorency avoids his feelings for George by just keeping busy, and Francis begins to grate with his impatient demands for action. Sure, it's all in keeping with his young, impetuous nature, but it keeps him from being likeable and I didn't really feel that he had grown or changed by the end of the book (though it's perhaps worth it for that scene in which he storms out in a temper only to be knocked unconscious and dragged home by a fierce schoolmaster).

The pacing was a lot slower this time around and most of the juicy developments were squeezed into the last few chapters. The parentage of Tom is finally revealed, but it's not only rather anti-climactic but it doesn't warrant much exploration throughout the course of the book (and is there a reason Vi never hooked up with Tom's father? There was nothing stopping her, and it seems odd that this option wasn't even discussed by those involved). Many historical characters and events are included just for the sake of it, and add nothing to the flow of the story. Finally, the story ends on a rather cruel cliff-hanger which results in a long wait for resolution in the next book.

This is certainly not a *bad* book, but it's not the best that this series has to offer either. In many ways it feels like an elaborate set-up for the next book, with many plot-points raised only to be put on hold for a later time.

Let Down

I was soo excited when this book came out that I ordered it from England before it was even printed in the States. But I was extremely disappointed. The plot was very juvenile and never developed completely. The ending was a cliff-hanger that promises another book, but I don't even know if I'll read the next one. =/ Too bad. The first three books were so good.

This is one of the best collection of information for any paediatric surgery examination.Has covered the length and breath of the subject in interactive question and answer format, sufficient for any exam in the subject.Many thanks to the editors and authors for all the hard work.The only thing that can probably be improved is the print format.Passed the FRCS paeditric surgery theory (part 1)examination because of this, cannot praise enough.
