The classic political dialogue, as relevant today as in Plato's time

Taking the form of a dialogue between Socrates, Gorgias, Polus and Callicles, Gorgias debates perennial questions about the nature of government and those who aspire to public office. Are high moral standards essential or should we give our preference to the pragmatist who gets things done or negotiates successfully? Should individuals be motivated by a desire for personal power and prestige, or genuine concern for the moral betterment of the citizens? These questions go to the heart of Athenian democratic principles and are more relevant than ever in today's political climate.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Excellent introduction to moral philosophy
By Scott Carson
Plato's Gorgias is one of the masterpieces not just of the Western, but of any Canon, and Waterfield's translation for Oxford World's Classics adds an informative introduction and many helpful explanatory notes. I have used this text for years in my ethics classes, and every time I read it I come away with something new. Plato pits Socrates, the defender of moral realism, against three opponents who represent varying degrees of moral relativism: Gorgias, the Elder Statesman of Sophistry, Polus, a young turk who is quickly trapped by Socrates, and Callicles, one of the greatest characters in all of philosophical literature, who presents a case not unlike that of Nietzsche's Uebermensch. Though it is difficult to say whether Socrates is fully successful in refuting his interlocutors, watching him try is both exciting and informative, and can serve as an excellent introduction to moral philosophy.

Still matters today
By Nathan Pratt
Elements of the book: do bad guys really win? Why be good if it doesn't pay? Why not profit and enjoy all the pleasures life can offer? All of these are still very relevant questions today.

Wonderful English translation of the Gorgias
By J. John
I assigned this to my political theory students last year, and learned what a fine job Arieti and Barrus have done. There are several other good translations out there; this one is more literal, but it makes good English sense nevertheless ("graspingness" and a few other awkward choices notwithstanding).

The great value of this edition, however, is the insightful scholarly introduction, the very helpful footnotes, the three appendices, and the glossary. The first appendix includes speeches from Thucydides which are relevant to the arguments about rhetoric from the Gorgias. The second one is an outline of the rhetorical principles laid out by the interloculotrs of the Gorgias, and the third is a short discussion of Socrates' use of the terms mythos and logos. The best thing in editorial materials, however, is the glossary, which offers extended scholarly explanations of key terms in the Gorgias and in Platonic philosophy generally.

On the downside: The translators have tried to show all the moving parts, as it were, of their work with the Greek text. So when they've supplied an English word not directly translated from a Greek word, they've put it in brackets. Some versions of the Bible do this as well. But the brackets are frequent and can get quite distacting at times, especially fro my undergrads I imagine. A more general concern with this choice would be: If you read Greek, you don't need Barrus and Arieti to tell you which words are direct translations and which aren't. But if you don't know Greek, you don't know what to do with this information, because you don't understand how the Greek sentence gets a long without these extra words. So it's seems like a pointless practice. Translate! And then when the readers learn Greek they can take a look at how you've done it.

Overall: a very impressive work, from two very careful and insightful readers and translators of Plato.

Before They're Gone: A Family's Year-Long Quest to Explore America's Most Endangered National Parks, by Michael Lanza

A lifelong backpacker, Michael Lanza knows our national parks like the back of his hand. As a father of two, he hopes to share these special places with his kids. But he has seen firsthand the changes wrought by global warming and understands what lies ahead: melting glaciers, disappearing species, and inundated coastlines. To Lanza, it feels like the house he grew up in is being looted. Painfully aware of the ecological--and spiritual--calamity that global warming will bring to our nation's parks, Lanza is determined to show his children these wonders before they have changed forever.

He takes his nine-year-old son, Nate, and seven-year-old daughter, Alex, on an ambitious journey to see as many climate-threatened wild places as he can fit into a year: backpacking in the Grand Canyon, Glacier, the North Cascades, Mt. Rainier, Rocky Mountain, and along the wild Olympic coast; sea kayaking in Alaska's Glacier Bay; hiking to Yosemite's waterfalls; rock climbing in Joshua Tree National Park; cross-country skiing in Yellowstone; and canoeing in the Everglades.

Through these adventures, Lanza shares the beauty of each place, and shows how his children connect with nature when given "unscripted" time. Ultimately, he writes, this is more their story than his, for whatever comes of our changing world, they are the ones who will live in it.

Review
"This is a terrific blend of adventure ('Seeing a bison gallop thirty miles an hour—as they can—is like seeing a grand piano suddenly sprout horns and charge you with the speed of a horse.') and ecological forecasting (and forewarning) that aptly conveys the passion of a devoted outdoorsman, and serves as a wake-up call to the state of our planet."—Publishers Weekly

“An informative, heartwarming and, at times, heart-stopping read.”—Colleen McBrinn, Today’s Travel blog

“The season’s must-read new memoir.”—Outside’s Raising Rippers blog

“A beautifully written, moving meditation.”—Richard Louv, author of The Nature Principle

"Before They're Gone is a beautifully written, moving meditation on the meaning of parenthood, our parks, and the first generation of children to grow up in the age of global warming."—Richard Louv, author of The Nature Principle and Last Child in the Woods

“Intriguing premise; decent execution—certainly of interest to environmentalists and other eco-minded readers.”—Kirkus Review

“Michael Lanza braids a story of family, wilderness, and climate that's at once heartwarming and terrifying. I envy his kids for the incredible year they spent exploring America's finest wild places. And I mourn that they—and my own daughter—will have to endure the devastating consequences of our heating planet. Lanza makes abundantly clear that our children deserve better than the legacy we’re leaving them.”—John Harlin, author of The Eiger Obsession: Facing the Mountain that Killed My Father

“I grew up in a national park, worked in twelve others and have visited well over two hundred of them. Their values, for people like me, often are taken for granted. In this wonderful book, Michael Lanza’s children learn and experience what is most important about our national parks – the necessity to leave them ‘unimpaired for future generations’ – and why.”—Bill Wade, Chair, Executive Council, Coalition of National Park Service Retirees and former superintendent of Shenandoah National Park

“Delightful … a fresh and engaging way to tell the climate change story.”—Laura Helmuth, senior science editor, Smithsonian

“Wilderness adventurers like Lanza are the advance scouts of global warming, bringing back firsthand testimony from pristine landscapes that powerfully corroborates what climate scientists are telling us about our changing planet. But this eyewitness report is much more than an impassioned polemic: it’s also an entertaining collection of backcountry anecdotes—surprise encounters with grizzlies, anxious moments on glaciers and wild coastlines, jaw-dropping views from remote summits—that bring climate change to life in a way that’s more palpable and persuasive than any data chart. Above all, Before They’re Gone is a fetching love letter to Mike’s wife, children, and friends and to the wild places he treasures as only a hiker, climber, and explorer can.”—Jonathan Dorn, editor in chief, Backpacker

Chapter 6: The Backbone of the World

August 2010

We hear the menacing snarls and let our eyes trace the sound to its
source. Just a few hundred feet below where we stand at 7,050-foot Lincoln
Pass in Montana’s Glacier National Park, two grizzly bear cubs tussle
playfully where this open, rocky mountainside meets a sparse conifer
forest. Vigilantly close by, their mom vacuums her nose over the ground,
searching for tidbits. A plus-size lady, she has a weight lifter’s physique
atop hips and legs that might cause a self-conscious bear to frown at her
reflection in a lake. But she moves like a four-hundred-pound ballet
dancer, hinting at speed and power that we cannot fathom.
Seeing her arouses a feeling so primal that few words even form in
our minds or emerge from our mouths. Our skin prickles, our throats
turn to sandpaper. If we possessed ears that normally drooped down,
at this moment they would stand straight up. If we had the option, we
would dive without further contemplation into a claustrophobic burrow
and cower for a long time.

But we have no burrow. And the bears are just four or five steps off
the trail we have to descend.

As any backpacker or armchair adventurer understands, this represents
the worst possible circumstance. A grizzly bear alone might normally
flee from the sounds and odors of humans, probably before the
people even realized a bear lurked nearby. But other than a polar bear, a griz sow with cubs is arguably the most fearsome, ferocious terrestrial
beast in the Americas. She may perceive any sizable creature in her vicinity
as a threat to her babies. Every two or three years in the western U.S.
or Canada, a sow horribly mauls or kills some hapless person guilty of
no more than stumbling upon the same patch of earth at exactly the
same moment as her cubs. In July 2011, a sow with cubs killed a 57-yearold
man hiking with his wife in Yellowstone.

So we wait, hoping the bears will move on. There is no wind; they
may not smell us. They disappear into the woods, but we periodically
hear their growls, too close to the trail for us to consider venturing down
there. An hour drips by like candle wax.

Three other hikers, two men and a woman, come along, heading
in our direction. After a brief, lively huddle, we agree on a plan: we will
walk in close formation down the trail, making abundant noise. Bears,
according to conventional thinking, will not engage this large a group
of people.

But apparently, these grizzlies did not read the rulebook.
As we buckle on backpacks, the woman says, gravely, “There are the
bears.” When we look downhill, she clarifies, “No, behind you.”
We spin around. The sow, not thirty feet away, saunters noiselessly
across the grassy meadow we’re standing in, her cubs in tow. While we
were strategizing how to outwit them with our superior intellects, they
had pulled off a perfect flanking maneuver. From this close, we see her
shoulder muscles rippling, the fur backlit by sunlight, and razor teeth
designed for tearing through flesh as her mouth gapes open.
Then she sniffs the air and swings her head to stare directly at us.
If there is a national park that seems created to fulfill the grandest
dreams of backpackers, it is Glacier.

Straddling the Continental Divide hard against the Canadian
border, the northernmost U.S. Rockies resemble a collection of
mountain-scale kitchen implements—meat-cleaver wedges of billionyear-
old rock and stone knives lined up in rows that stretch for miles,
everything standing with blades pointed upward. More than a hundred
of them rise above eight thousand feet, the highest exceeding ten
thousand feet.

Streams collect the runoff from fields of melting snow and ice,
pouring down mountainsides, shouting loudest when crashing over innumerable
cascades and waterfalls. Late-afternoon sunlight glints off
pebbly creeks spilling from lakes, the water’s surface sparkling like diamonds
slowly twisting. Geological strata stripe mountainsides in parallel
bands. Wildflowers in a palette of colors dapple vast, treeless tundra
plateaus.

The Blackfoot called these mountains “the backbone of the world.”
The description fits a place where the land vaults up so dramatically
from the very edge of the Plains—and where Triple Divide Peak is one
of only two North American mountains that funnel waters to three
oceans: the Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic.

Swiss-born paleontologist Louis Agassiz, hailed as one of the greatest
scientists of his time, comprehended the origins of places like the
future Glacier National Park. In the 1840s, he theorized that an ice age
had once locked up much of the planet. His ideas explained the signs of
glaciers in Europe and North America where they did not exist: ground
scraped down to striated bedrock, and massive “glacial-erratic” boulders
deposited in meadows and forests by some mysterious but powerful
force. Today, a glacier in the north of this park is named for him.

The renowned writer George Bird Grinnell, who began lobbying to
designate the area a national park after visiting in the 1880s, called these
mountains “the Crown of the Continent.” The Great Northern Railway,
hoping to bring in paying tourists, dubbed the area “Little Switzerland.”
But in one important aspect, it differed from the Swiss Alps as much
as Central Park from the Serengeti: unlike the settled Alpine valleys and
mountainside meadows, the Northern Rockies were an intact, pristine
wilderness. Today, some 90 percent of the park’s million acres remain
inaccessible except to those willing to explore on foot.

Glacier is among just a few U.S. wild lands outside of Alaska that
host a nearly complete array of the continent’s native megafauna. Only
two are missing: the bison and woodland caribou. Sixty-two mammal
species live here, and 260 kinds of birds are seen. Glacier and neighboring
Waterton Lakes National Park in Canada have been designated
an international peace park, an international biosphere reserve, and a
World Heritage Site.

A backpacker on any of the park’s more than seven hundred miles
of trails may lose count of how many times she sees cliff-scaling, bearded
mountain goats. Many backpackers go home with breathless tales of
walking past that most regal of creatures, the bighorn sheep. Some—like
my friend Geoff Sears when we took a trip here together—tell of leaving
a sweaty T-shirt hanging outside to dry overnight, only to discover it
even more soaked in the morning because deer have gummed it for the
salt from perspiration. Hikers in early fall might hear bull elk bugle or
see two bull moose clashing massive antlers.

Encounters with black or grizzly bears—both number in the hundreds
here—occur rarely, for one simple reason: a bear will usually detect
the humans first and avoid them. This dynamic undoubtedly serves
the interests of both parties. A bear attacking people ultimately loses, as
park officials will destroy it. And no one with a healthy attitude toward
life wants to cross paths with a grizzly.

When Lewis and Clark explored the American West, the grizzly
numbered an estimated 50,000 and ranged over two-thirds of the contiguous
United States, from the Canadian border to Mexico to Ohio.

While more numerous in Canada and Alaska, about 1,400 remain in
the Lower 48, and they live only where humans tolerate them. More
than seven hundred bears dwell in Glacier and the surrounding national
forests, and another six hundred in Greater Yellowstone. Small, at-risk
populations hang on in remote mountains in Washington, northern
Idaho, and northwestern Montana.

No other species in North America shapes our perception of wilderness
as definitively as the grizzly. There are wild lands with grizzlies, and
there are those without, and they are as far apart in our minds as terror
is from thrill.

Where they live, we enter the woods with a heightened alertness.
Every dense copse of spruce trees or tall bushes potentially harbors a
menace. Come upon a steaming pile of scat the size of a soccer ball, and
you will wonder which direction the bear went and which you should
go. We are not so far evolved from our hunter-gatherer ancestors to have
lost our innate aversion to being eaten.

Encounter a great bear close up and, regardless of how you had planned to react, you may find yourself overwhelmed by one instinctive
thought: flee. You backpedal, maybe stumble. You might reach for the
pepper spray on your belt or forget it’s there. You know in your bones
that you possess little control over what happens next.

Terror hits hard right in the gut and takes the wind out of you. I
know, because I’ve felt it.

When that sow grizzly and her cubs crept up so stealthily behind
my friend Jerry Hapgood and me at Lincoln Pass on that late-summer
morning, she not only Tasered us with one of the biggest, voice-seizing
frights of our lives; she also clarified an unsettling truth: when you walk
through country inhabited by grizzly bears, you see and hear them
everywhere—except the ones that are actually right on top of you. To
our good fortune and vast relief, that sow and her cubs merely continued
on their way, giving us no more than a glance.

Now, eleven months later, I’m backpacking that same trail in Glacier
with my wife and children, on another perfect summer day in
mountains carved from glaciers but designed in dreams.

And I am thinking about bears.

Deals with stewardship of nature and family
By Kristal D. Cooper
I'm going to give this author the highest praise I can think of: His writing style is Krakauer-esque. The words and phrases he uses to describe the outdoors and his family's experiences evoke perfect images. Some may think it's hyperbole, but I assure you that our National Parks are worthy.

One of my favorite lines: "Powerful landscapes like the Tetons will manhandle your psyche; they can make you wonder what the hell you've been doing all these years, for which you won't have a satisfying answer." (This exact scenario happened to me and my husband during a vacation to Zion, after which we quit our high-paying jobs, bought an RV, and moved to the Grand Canyon. In the five years since, we've worked and lived in five National Parks - each an experience beyond belief.) If YOU haven't felt the emotion Lanza describes in that quote, I say: "Get thee to a National Park." Quick!

And that's the jist of this book... The parts of this country that were so unique we decided to make them National Parks and protect them for posterity are being dramatically changed by global warming. Everything IS connected and Lanza does a great job of laying out the parade of cause and effect that will make our country's most special treasures un-recognizable in just a few decades.

This is a book with an important message, but there are plenty of personal anecdotes and fun thrown in too. I recommend it to anyone and everyone -- you'll enjoy the ride and learn a lot as you go.

A Trifecta
By Stumbles
Wow. Lanza has delivered a hat-trick of an read that I couldn't put down. As an engaged citizen, his ability to deliver the message of climate change and its impact on lands I love was real and compelling. As an outdoor lover, Before They're Gone took me back to familiar stomping grounds at some of our national jewels while adding new 'must do' trips to my life-list. And as a parent of children the same age as Lanza's children, I read his book with awe and admiration for a parent who so purposefully is creating such a rich childhood and lifelong memories for his whole family. The only better thing than finishing his book was the permit arriving in the mail last week for our first backpacking trip in a National Park with my children that was inspired by his example. Lanza's gift to me will go far beyond his inspirational and entertaining writing.

A book you don't want to miss
By TamG
Before They're Gone is equal parts travel journal, personal memoir, and environmental reality check. Author Michael Lanza's year long quest to share with his children the now most threatened parks in America is both bittersweet, and heartwarming. Liberally sprinkled with memories of past treks, scientific data, and the simple pleasures of a parent spending time with his kids. Michael's detailed, and often times humorous, writing makes you long to be relaxing in the shade of lodgepole pines in the Rocky Mountains, or watching the sun set in the Everglades, right alongside them. To me, Before They're Gone is proof that even though our environment is changing, and not for the better, we can still celebrate, enjoy, and hopefully preserve, what we have left.

The Case of the Gilded Fly (The First Gervase Fen Mystery), by Edmund Crispin

Theater companies are notorious hotbeds of intrigue, and few are more intriguing than the company currently in residence at Oxford University. Center-stage is the beautiful, malicious Yseut, a mediocre actress with a stellar talent for destroying men. Rounding out the cast are more than a few of her past and present conquests, and the women who love them. And watching from the wings is Professor Gervase Fen?scholar, wit, and fop extraordinaire?who would rather solve crimes than expound on English literature. When Yseut is murdered, Fen finally gets his wish. Gilded Fly, originally published in 1944, was both Fen's first outing and the debut of the pseudonymous Crispin (in reality, composer Bruce Montgomery).

Eloquent

I definitely learned some new vocabulary words reading this book. Luckily I read it on my iPad; in book form I would have needed a dictionary close by. I like a lot of background and detail, but the characters did not "come alive" for me as they do in a Georgette Heyer book. And I will never understand poetry. At least nothing deeper than the man from Nantucket. I had to take notes to keep track of the characters, and I referred to them often. Sigh.

I'm glad I decided to read this story again.
By J. Lesley
It has been a long time since I first read The Case of the Gilded Fly and I'm really glad that I found some time to sit down and enjoy it again after all these years. That is one of the things I love so much about these old, classic mysteries. No matter how much time has passed the story always seems just as exciting as it was the first time around. Modern mystery writers could do themselves a huge favor by immersing themselves in writings of the 1930's, 40's and 50's.

Gervase Fen is an Oxford don who specializes in English literature but really wants to work on murder cases. His longtime friend, Sir Richard Freeman, Chief Constable of Oxford, really wanted to study and critique English literature. These two made wonderful counterpoints because they both wanted to concentrate most on the thing the other did for a living. These two characters are wonderfully written by Edmund Crispin. Mainly, for me, because we get to see the best of both professions but given to us from the point of view of the character we would not necessarily expect.

The book opens in a most clever way. All the characters make the railway journey from London to Oxford within days of each other. Each is described during the train trip in wonderful detail concerning their reasons for going to Oxford and the reader is thoroughly acquainted with the characters by the time they all arrive at their destination. Because of the abrasive nature of one character, it is pretty obvious who the murder victim will be but Crispin takes his time leading up to the murder. By the time it happens, you are very much in sympathy with whoever decided to do this person in and Fen's quandry about whether or not to prove the person guilty is rather easy to understand. Because, Fen does know immediately who the murderer is. I, on the other hand, was not so quick off the mark. I had someone else chosen and resolutely hung on to that person until the bitter end.

Crispin has the Gervase Fen character utilize his vast knowlege of English literature very extensively. Sometimes, it can be somewhat confusing to someone (such as myself) who has only a basic smattering of knowlege of the subject. Still, one of the references did prompt me to do a little research to seek out the quote and read it in its entirety. I must confess that I find myself still scratching my head to try to decide if I think the (first) murder could have taken place in just that way. Wow, what a marksman! and on the spur of the moment too! Also, the motive for the first murder seemed to be rather weak for my taste. I would have liked for a weightier matter to have been the catalyst from which this malevolence sprang.

I love these old mysteries. I think they contain huge doses of character and charm. I really like to set aside uninterrupted time to fully involve myself in the atmosphere of the story. If this sounds like something you enjoy also, then Edmund Crispin could be just the author you are looking for. If you've already met Fen, Mrs. Fen and the little Fen consider going back for another time to a world which probably never existed anyplace outside mystery fiction but which I sincerely wish I had inhabited, even if just for a short time.

Excellent
By Mary B.
This is typical Crispin, with the added joy of a glimpse into the inner workings of an English repertory company putting together a new play. I deducted a star because of Crispin's compulsive use of obscure words, but I must admit I like his books partly because of his precise, loving use of the English language. Without the Kindle's instant access to the dictionary, it'd be irritating, and even with the dictionary you don't always get a definition because the words are so very obscure. Other than that, it's a by-the-numbers Golden Age mystery that should satisfy fans who love Christie, etc.

From the Author

There are compelling reasons why ‘Slingshot’ was chosen as the title of this book. My purpose in writing it was to show a practical path to unconventional thinking and to inspire a re-connection with our natural, childhood creativity – as a foundation for formulating successful strategies.

About the Author
Gabor George Burt was born in Budapest, Hungary. He holds a BA in psychology from Amherst College as well as an MBA from INSEAD, France.

Over the past decade Gabor has gained international recognition in the management world as a pioneer in the strategic perspective of Defying Conventional Wisdom, as well as a leading expert on Blue Ocean Strategy, the influential framework that transforms unconventional ideas into successful strategies. He is actively involved in shaping strategy for a diverse group of international clients from Fortune 500 firms to successful start-ups and leading by example through his own initiatives, such as the Immersive Executive Experience series and Team-O Entertainment.

Gabor writes articles for leading business publications and co-hosts a nationally broadcast radio show. His blog has been selected as one of the top online resources on innovation. Gabor has been featured in the book Radical Action for Radical Times, contributed case study material for the record-breaking book Blue Ocean Strategy, and is the author of the upcoming Appetizers of Wit and Wisdom, a collection of comic anecdotes and provocative observations.

Inspiration for this book came from Gabor's wide-ranging experience as a strategist, business developer, idea liberator, and provocateur, from his fun-loving wife and four incomparable children.

"Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up."
By Majid Riahi
Ask yourself this: Am I open to transforming my creativity and innovative thinking? Whether it be business or everyday life, who on Earth wouldn't? Since finishing Slingshot, I'm convinced anyone can benefit from the authors inspiring and revolutionary business perspective.

Gabor George Burt's new book explores the importance of re-discovering (and utilizing) your childhood creativity for business and life. Packed inside 230 pages, you will find complementary illustrations by children ranging from grades 1st to 6th, as well as quotes and anecdotes from influential thinkers of our generation. Gabor's book excels where many other business texts fall short: style *along with* substance. He engrosses readers with a charming and enthusiastic approach, while providing a detailed roadmap to apply your newly discovered creativity in the business realm. Gabor demonstrates the applicability of Slingshot by offering a unique framework detailed from front to back. The following is a bite-sized teaser of the blueprint:

[Slingshot Framework]

I) Infatuation Interval
An unavoidable facet of human nature is yearning for things that we do not yet possess. While infatuation can surely spawn from new products, this eventually creates a sense of entitlement (with a few exceptions) where the consumer carries a heightened level of demands and expectations. Nothing is ever good enough for us! Thus the underlying question: How can we create everlasting Infatuation Intervals to curb entitlement?

II) Lifestyle Enrichment
How exactly can infatuation become a catalyst to sustainable business? What makes companies such as Apple, Manchester United, and others successful in generating such a devoted consumer base? The answer can be found in the practice of Lifestyle (for B2C's) or Workplace (for B2B's) Enrichment.

III) Defying Conventional Wisdom
Traditional ways of thinking tend to close our perspective into "accepting things only as they are", which can act as a barrier to innovative thinking. How do we revert back to the enthusiasm of our childhood, a time when anything was possible? What is the importance of bearing unconventional wisdom and how can we achieve this?

IV) Accordion Chart
How would you define your business? Who are your most relevant (not only the most direct) competitors? Since these questions can be difficult for people to accurately diagnose, Gabor introduces his Accordion Chart Process that provides readers a flexible solution to issues within a strategic landscape.

V) Creating Blue Oceans
The many insights within this book can be systematically applied by using Blue Ocean Strategy, a deeply influential business perspective introduced by INSEAD professor W. Chan Kim (a former teacher and mentor of the author). Gabor George Burt, an internationally-recognized expert of Blue Ocean Strategy in his own right, provides readers with indispensable knowledge in this arena.

As a young business student and growing entrepreneur, I find myself instinctively utilizing concepts that were learned within Slingshot. Gabor (with props to a certain Thomas Edison) taught me never to pick up an item without thinking of how I might improve it. Accordingly, my highest recommendation is that Slingshot is the next item you pick up--I'll look for your Thank You Cards in the mail!

5 out of 5 stars.

thinking the way many people perceive as crazy actually works
By Victoria Cortés R:
I can tell you right now that just reading the book was a life enrichment experience, the book and the images shown, every example inserts you in a different way to view the world, people's needs and wants, and as you say it puts companies in the mind of the consumer to create something that they didn't even knew they wanted but then it's very possible they don't want to live without it, they want to have it at all cost.

Reading the book, many things stormed into my mind, things that I had already seen, in movies or books but that you don't put together at the time, like the example about the bank, they won an award for the way they gave credit and help people get to where they want to be in life, I immediately thought about a Jim Carey movie "Yes Man", his character worked in a bank approving (or not so much) credits to people, you can see at the beginning of the movie that he rejected practically all of them, but once he started saying yes to everything the bank discovered that the people asking for small credits were so grateful to get the help they needed to fulfill their dreams that they made all of their payments on time, and they promoted the character and created a new business unit inside the bank. It was the unconventional thinking that got him there, to say yes instead of no all the time, which in his job was kind of a requirement.

The other thing was the example of the moo - seums, they sounded really cool, and something very similar was done here in Chile, it's practically the same, we have local artists painting horses in 3 or 4 different poses and set them in front of building in main streets, this was done a couple of years ago, and just last year it was duplicated with heart shaped art, they were actually located very closed to were you were staying. And like you said it was impossible to scape if you wanted to, when finally admiring them every day on my way to work, I stopped to take a closer look at them, to see who the artists were, and what was the name each, It was great to see that it gave a chance for unknown art students, and even children to show their work for everyone to see.

I think the book gives you the necessary tools to reengage with your childhood way of thinking, thinking that many people perceive as crazy but actually works, it made me think of a quote from George Bernard Shaw, whom you quoted in Slingshot, it's a phrase that since a read has always stuck with me "The reasonable man adapts himself to the world, the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man".

A Most Entertaining Business Read
By lg3
Slingshot is the most entertaining and atypical business book I have ever encountered. The illustrations are a delight. The case studies are fascinating. Gabor very carefully guides the reader into an exploration of imagination and creative thinking. This book will certainly influence our approach to business challenges. Perhaps even more than that, after reading and considering the book the reader will feel that he has just encountered a life-enhancing message that will influence all of life. I have read this book twice, and now find that what I engage in the book is working its way into my thoughts and conversations almost daily.

By Jose L. Chicoma

By Victor Gonzaga

By Luis Méndez

Not really useful
By Damian Walczak
I read that in 1 day, but it's not really enough to start building apps - it might be enough if you need to use python for copying some files around or prepare really basic script. For me it was waste of money.

Then I start reading the Learning Python by Mark Lutz, but it's 1600 pages and not really nice to read after first 200 either.

The best book I had after that, Dive Into Python 3.
You need some good basics in programming, but it's diving straight to what you need to know to really start programming with python. Really nice read (I had Kindle edition, worth buying).

For Beginners
By Peter
Python in a Day was, for me, no more than an overview in a couple of hours. But for those with virtually no programming experience, for whom this book is targeted, this book is well written. Better yet, borrow the book from Amazon Kindle Prime Lending Library or from your local library, for this may be a good, quick read, but it's not a keeper.

Precisely. It teaches python in a very short time.
By vinodh bangalore
Hi,
I am a full time programmer for past 15 years.
mostly in to java/j2ee server side programming.
I have hands on experience in php/mysql as well.
I always wanted to learn python as there are possibilities of freelance gigs.
I studied the material in 2 hours.
No doubt this is one of the quickest possible way to learn python.
Even if one has no programming experience one can complete
the material and start using it in a day . Bare minimum but sufficient concepts are being taught. Its not exhaustive. which is fine . It wont be possible for us to complete it in a day if exhaustive. highly recommended.
regards
vinodh

Geometry Book Review
By Omar L. Hacallar
To Whom It May Concern:

I totally agree with Mr. Richard Kleinschmidt "RichK" regarding the book not being more descriptive with their explanations regarding the examples, I would rank this book with Geometry for Enjoyment and Challenge by Milauskas et. al. Geometry for Enjoyment and Challenge gives better examples, but some of the exercises in this book are more challenging. Three-dimensional and solid geometry is covered extensively approximately 4 chapters are covered throughout this text. I thought this book was great, the exercises range from the level of difficulty (A-1, A-2, and B) This title does not truly describe the difficulty of the book A Course In Geometry, it should be titled An indepth course on Geometry because thats what it is, this book would definitely cater for an honors class.

The major gripe about this book is that in Ch.15 they mix two-dimensional geometry with three-dimensional geometry basically a square pyramid being broken down into 4 isosceles right triangles and a square and calculating the surface area and volume. Their is no general formula for calculating the lateral area like several books, such as calculating the slant height and the formula lateral area equals 1/2 times the perimeter times the slant height. The three-dimensional part should have been separate and not being merged in two-dimensional geometry and three-dimensional geometry.

My favorite part of the book are the congruent triangle proofs using the asa, sas, sss, and aas theorem, they are quite extensive some proofs take 12 steps. and the areas of segments of circles (hexagons incribed in circles, squares inscibed in circles, equilateral and isoceles triangles inscribed in circles) areas of composite figures (trapezoids and rectangles connected to each other, etc.) the area of six-shaped flower, I feel the authors intentionally on each chapter did not vgive that much examples in a descriptive manner, to make the teacher teach and force the student to learn to think critically by visualizing and using mathematical reasoning. If you want a challenge and get the most out of geometry, get this book. I enjoy reading and solving math problems for fun. I collect books for a living and do this on my spare time. Other positives are the explanation and derivation of three-dimensional theorems such as the surface area and volumes of spheres, cones, etc. There are problems of calculating the area of lune, a fraction of the area of a sphere, that is like calculating the area of a circle in 3-dimensions. That is what a sphere is a 3-dimesnional circle. No other book in high school will talk about lunars, until you hit calculus. This will really prepare an engineering, mathematics or anybody who is in the scientific discipline such as physics, geology, chemistry, economics (social science) or someone who wants a challenge in math and has a thirst for knowledge this is one of the best math books around to prepare to be ready for higher levels of math.

Overall, I give this book 4 stars I would have given 5 if the book was more organized.

A delightful classic
By Richard Kleinschmidt
This book covers classical Euclidian geometry. It has been around a long time. (The 1982 copyright date is just the last time the text was revised for printing. The pictures etc. date back to the 1940's.) The exercises are delightfully challenging.
Amazon listed the book's reading level as "young adult". I have been teaching advanced HS geometry classes with this book for 6 years, and I can report that most bright students find the language challenging without someone to help them along. If you are homeschooling etc, you may want to investigate whether you can get the solution text from the publisher.
I give the exercises in the book 5 stars. Again and again I find myself saying: wow I never would have thought of that. The text that accompanies the exercises gets only three stars.

Good Book at Great Price
By mlc
This book is more focused on Geometry than many of the recent textbooks used in my school district. I wonder why this book is not in the mainstream.
