"Failed States: Unstable Countries in the 21st Century" by Matthew Bukovic is a Rosen publication in the young adult current events series, "In The News." Using a device called the Conflict Assessment System Tool (CAST), data relating to political, economic, and social conditions is collected and analyzed by computer software on 177 countries. CAST was created by Dr. Pauline Baker, president of the Fund for Peace, in 1996. A color coded global map showing recent results of the annual CAST data collection is on page 6 of "Failed States." it divides the countries of the world into four categories, Alert, (red-orange), Warning (light orange), Moderate (yellow), and Sustainable (green). It is of interest that the United States is classified as at Moderate risk by the CAST Failed States Index, whereas Australia, Great Britain, and Canada are classified as Sustainable. After defining what is a failed state, following chapters cover How States Fail, Finding Solutions, The Road to Recovery, and Looking to the Future. Predictions for failed states in the future include Mexico, Saudi Arabia and Thailand, among others. In addition to documented definitions and discussion of causes and solutions for failed states, there is a glossary, a section on more information including web sites and other sources of information, suggested further reading, a bibliography, and an index.
